Nurse Jackie Premiere Poster

With only a few weeks left until the premiere of Nurse Jackie, it’s become painfully obvious that “life is full of little pricks.”

But, don’t take my word for it. Just ask Nurse Jackie.

Edie Falco - A Brooklyn Born Lead

I’m thrilled to finally see Edie Falco in a leading role. I’ve followed this amazing actor since her role as Officer Diane Whittlesey on Oz - still miss that show.

Being a Brooklyn born actor, Falco’s got a special place in this writer’s heart. If Brooklyn will forever be known for Jackie Gleason, it may now be forever remembered for another Jackie.

Kudos to Showtime for commissioning more TV programs that have women leads. Everyone keeps saying that viewers started seeing women as being funny again after “Baby Mama” hit the the movie theaters. That’s total BS. Before there was any “Baby Mama,” there was Weeds starring Mary Louise Parker as Nancy Botwin. Not to mention plans for United States of Tara, starring Toni Collette, were well under way before anyone knew about the film.

Showtime and its audiences always considered women funny and saw the potential for women leads. There’s no reason why comedies starring women should be considered an epiphany just because everyone else had their eyes shut. Nuff said.

Edie Falco in Nurse Jackie

Three-time Emmy® Award winner Edie Falco is coming to a New York City hospital for SHOWTIME’s new half-hour single camera dark comedy series NURSE JACKIE (working title), it was jointly announced today by Robert Greenblatt, President of Entertainment for Showtime, and Kevin Beggs, President of Programming and Production for Lionsgate. The twelve episode, half-hour series will star Falco as a strong-willed, iconoclastic New York City nurse juggling the frenzied grind of an urban hospital and an equally challenging personal life. The series will go into production in New York in late 2008, and will premiere in 2009.

NURSE JACKIE is a half-hour dark comedy that is at turns wicked, heartbreaking and funny. Edie Falco stars as the title character Jackie O’Hurley, a strong-willed and brilliant — but very flawed — emergency room nurse in a complicated New York City hospital. A lapsed Catholic with an occasional weakness for Vicodin and Adderall to get her through the days, Jackie keeps the hospital balanced with her own kind of justice. Every day is a high wire act of juggling patients, doctors, fellow nurses and her own indiscretions. The series also stars Eve Best, Peter Facinelli, Merritt Wever, Haaz Sleiman and Paul Schulze.
