I’m thrilled to finally see Edie Falco in a leading role. I’ve followed this amazing actor since her role as Officer Diane Whittlesey on Oz - still miss that show.
Being a Brooklyn born actor, Falco’s got a special place in this writer’s heart. If Brooklyn will forever be known for Jackie Gleason, it may now be forever remembered for another Jackie.
Kudos to Showtime for commissioning more TV programs that have women leads. Everyone keeps saying that viewers started seeing women as being funny again after “Baby Mama” hit the the movie theaters. That’s total BS. Before there was any “Baby Mama,” there was Weeds starring Mary Louise Parker as Nancy Botwin. Not to mention plans for United States of Tara, starring Toni Collette, were well under way before anyone knew about the film.
Showtime and its audiences always considered women funny and saw the potential for women leads. There’s no reason why comedies starring women should be considered an epiphany just because everyone else had their eyes shut. Nuff said.
